How do Students Submit a Kaltura Video to a Canvas Assignment?

Students can submit videos to a Canvas assignment through Kaltura. Students can either embed and submit a pre-recorded video stored in their My Media or record and upload a video directly into the assignment. 

Set Up the Assignment

  1. Log in to Canvas.
  2. Navigate to "Assignments" in the course navigation menu.
  3. Click "+ Add Assignment."
  4. Enter the required assignment information (Name, points, group, etc.).
  5. Under "Submission Type," select "Online" from the dropdown menu.
  6. Important: Check the box next to "Text Entry."
    • The Text Entry option allows students to use the Rich Content Editor, which contains the Embed Kaltura Media tool they'll use to upload and submit video files through Kaltura.
  7. Click "Save and Publish."
  8. Once students submit their videos, you can view them in SpeedGrader.

Student Submission Steps

Share the following steps with students for submitting a Kaltura video to a Canvas assignment.

  1. Navigate to the Assignment in Canvas.
  2. Click "Start Assignment" in the upper right corner.
  3. In the text entry box, click the plug icon.
    • Depending on your screen size, you may need to click the three dots to expand the toolbar.
  4. From the dropdown menu, select "Embed Kaltura Media."

  5. Click the "+ Add New" button.
  6. Select a video option:
    • Media Upload: Directly upload a video from your computer.
    • Kaltura Capture: Record a video using Kaltura's capture tool.
  7. Name the video and, if necessary, add a description.
  8. Click "Save and Embed" in the upper right corner.
  9. Select "Yes, please" for the popup question, "Would you like to submit media as assignment?"

  10. Click "Submit Assignment."
    • You can submit the assignment even if it says, "Media is being processed." You do not have to wait for the video to finish processing before submitting.
