When are quizzes available to students?

Answer

Quizzes are available to students based on the "Available From" and "Until" dates in Canvas. The Available From and Until fields allow you to set a specific period for students to take a quiz. There are three date settings when you create a Canvas quiz:

  1. Due Date: A quiz is available to students when you publish it. Due dates allow for late submissions, which are marked late after the due date and time.
    • If you only set a due date in the quiz settings, the quiz is not set to auto-submit by the due date. It will only auto-submit on the course conclusion date.
  2. Available from: A published quiz becomes available to students on this day and time.
  3. Until: A published quiz becomes unavailable to students on this day and time.
    • If you set an until date in the quiz settings, the quiz will auto-submit at the until date.
    • If you set the until date to after the due date, Canvas will mark the quiz as late.
    • If you set a time limit with an until date, Canvas will auto-submit the quiz when time expires unless the until date expires first, so be cautious when combining time limits with until dates.

Important: The Until date overrides any extensions or accommodations you add in Canvas Quizzes. Ensure the Until date is set to include any additional time.

If you do not want students to access a quiz before a specific date, ensure you have set the "Available from" date and time, particularly if you plan to publish the Quiz page before administering the exam.
