How do I work with downloaded student submissions?
Answer
Instructors can download student submissions from Canvas to grade them locally on their computer. The files download as a single file called "submissions.zip".
Download files
- Log in to Canvas.
- Navigate to "Grades" in the course navigation menu.
- Click the three dots next to an assignment name.
- Select "Download submissions" from the dropdown menu.
- Select "Click here to download" to move the file to your local computer.
- For Mac: Double-click the file.
- For PC: Right-click the file and select "Extract All."
Add comments
The first time you open a file, it opens in "protected view."
- Click on "enable editing."
- Edit the file, enable track changes, and make comments on the file.
- Save the file.
- After you've commented on all the files: Right-click on the Submissions folder and zip it back up by selecting "Send to" and "Compressed (zip) folder."
Important: Do not change the names of the submission files from your bulk download. With different file names, Canvas cannot recognize the files that should be replaced.
Re-upload files
After adding comments, instructors can then re-upload all student submissions to an assignment in the Gradebook.
- Log in to Canvas.
- Navigate to "Grades" in the course navigation menu.
- Click the three dots next to an assignment name.
- Select "Re-upload submissions" from the dropdown menu.
- Select the zip file from your local computer.
- Click "Upload files."
